Orimattila orders prefabricated fluidised bed heating plant

Renewa’s prefabricated fluidised bed heating plant secures fuel flexibility in Orimattila

Orimattilan Lämpö, a district heating company owned by the town of Orimattila in Southern Finland, has placed an order to Renewa for a biomass fired heating plant. The 10 MW plant will be prefabricated at Renewa’s workshop and will be transported to the site in containers. The handover will take place at the end of 2010. The turn-key supply contract covers a complete delivery of the fluidised boiler, heat recovery and distribution equipment, a flue gas cleaning system, piping system, construction, electrification, and the control system.

The heating plant will produce energy using wood-based fuel sourced from local suppliers, in accordance with the Finnish national energy strategy. This means Orimattilan Lämpö’s energy audit will not be encumbered by emissions caused by long transport distances, and the acquisition of fuel for the plant will support local businesses. The heating plant will also be able to utilise other types of fuel if necessary, such as peat and, in the future, other combustible materials as well. If the environmental authorities give their permission, the plant will seek to exploit a particularly abundant local raw material around Orimattila – namely, horse manure – as a source of energy, which can be dried and mixed with wood chips. A key idea behind the biomass combustion heating plant has been the opportunity to use a flexible range of renewable fuels so as not to be dependent on price fluctuations or production bottlenecks for any particular source in the future.

“Here at Orimattila we value and support methods of generating heat that have the least possible impact on the environment. Environmental issues are important to our customers, and they also want to know how their heating is produced,” explained Reijo Hutri, Managing Director of Orimattilan Lämpö Oy. “We chose the supplier for the plant based on a strict selection process with a clear points-based system. Our criteria were technical know-how, experience, reliability and competitive pricing. We have been very happy in our partnership with Renewa, right from the start,” he added.
